The song “Gloomy Sunday” is often referred to as the “Hungarian Suicide Song” since it is connected to a great number of suicides during the 20th century. There are reports that say a woman in London killed herself as a consequence of an overdose while she was listening to “Gloomy Sunday”. Moreover, it is reported that one shopkeeper from Budapest killed himself and left a note in which he quoted the lyrics. There was also a young girl from Vienna who got drowned after listening to it. When you think of the lyrics, it’s no wonder why these people decided on such an act:
“My heart and I have decided to end it all
Soon there’ll be candles and prayers that are sad, I know
Let them not weep, let them know that I’m glad to go
Death is no dream, for in death I’m caressing you
With the last breath of my soul I’ll be blessing you”
